2nd Place Large Bath/Addition
NKBA Design Contest
Master bath suite in Leschi area.
The demolition phase of this master suite project had already begun when the owners contacted me to review their architectural plans and to explore the possibility of creating a plan which encompassed their wishes for the space. A two-story addition was planned with the exterior walls already set as the engineering had been done and the building permits were in place.
DESIGN PROBLEMS:
-
Project had begun
-
Engineering of plans required the existing exterior wall remain in sections as a shear wall
-
The addition space could not be changed-the new exterior wall including the windows had to remain as it was drawn, in the architectural plan
-
It was important not to take additional space from adjoining areas
-
Budget considerations had to be met with the product selections
-
A less complicated and more direct access into the bedroom from the hall (furniture access)
CLIENT REQUESTS:
-
A walk-in shower for two with no door
-
A tub that could take advantage of the "birds nest" view from the bathroom
-
The toilet and bidet to have privacy
-
Two sinks-but not next to each other (He said she is too messy!)
-
The space needed to also include a generous walk-in closet and generous storage space.
-
A contemporary style to match the very contemporary architecture and interior design
-
Easy to care for surfaces
-
Position the bathroom user to take advantage of the lake and territorial view
DESIGN SOLUTION:
-
The entire closet/bathroom space was reconfigured
-
The entry hallway was eliminated with a new angled entry into the bedroom and a reconfigured closet
-
The bathroom design was worked around the shear walls
-
A separate area with a pocket door housed the toilet and bidet
-
Using two semi-encased lav sinks and shallower countertops alleviated the somewhat narrow space for the vanities.
-
36" high countertops were well suited for the taller than average clients.
-
By positioning the sinks "around the corner" from each other, the users maintain the feeling of a separate space.
-
The vanity mirrors reflect the view from every angle in the room
-
The angled oval jetted tub softens the rectangular spaces of the room, allowing one to bask in the view of the lake but still feel a sense of privacy
-
A walk in shower created by curving glass block walls guides one into the space of the bathroom, allowing entry into the shower without a door. The shower is generously proportioned for two bathers, has two showers including one personal shower, body sprays, a bench and recessed niche and shelves for storage of bathing needs. If needed the entrance to the shower could be modified to include a door for wheel chair accessibility.
-
Generous storage space was accomplished with an appliace garage with an electrical outlet for "her" grooming items, a linen cabinet and a removable (for tub motor access) niche for towels.
-
Moderately priced and easy to care for cabinets with a subtle pattern; cultured marble countertops, shower surround, tub deck and slip resistant shower floor helped to moderate the costs of a luxury space.
-
Shades of white continued the color palette of the home, with accents drawn from the owner's collection of antique carousel horses.
All of the client's wishes were accomplished with the reworked plan. The space is bright and light even on a dreary day-a cheery wake up call on any morning. After they had been told the bathroom was as good as it would get with the previous design, the clients were amazed that all their requirements could be met with a design they love to live in.
