DESIGN CHALLENGES

  • Create a bathroom that reflects the natural outdoors by using colors and products of nature

  • Utilize the space more efficiently

  • The bathroom will have an entrance from the hall and the master bedroom

  • More natural light needed

  • Space for indoor plants

  • Have the room make a statement

SPACE INSUFFICIENCIES

  • Little natural light

  • Master bedroom closet space insufficient

  • Bathroom layout awkward

SOLUTIONS

  • Extend the closet into the existing tub area

  • Provide his and her hanging areas and shelving for toiletries and misc. items

  • Move the bathing area to a walk in shower on the outside wall

  • Add a garden window in the shower to make the shower area more spacious feeling and provide a humid environment for tropical plants

  • Reverse swing the entrance door from the hallway into the bathroom

  • Install a pocket door in the wall between the master bedroom and the closet for privacy

  • Add a molded glass sink and counter top for a focal point on the angled wall

AESTHETICS

  • Contrasting surfaces

  • Natural multicolored slate set horizontally with a hand cut edge flowing across the walls to soften the look. Radiant floor heat was added for warmth and comfort.

  • Glossy plum, green, and burgundy 3-inch ceramic, leaf print tiles were set at random on the floor and walls to create contrast to the irregularity and low sheen surface of the slate.

  • The garden window is partially sand blasted for privacy. This window area in the shower provides light and humidity for tropical plants. The sill is accented with a continuous row of alternating colored ceramic leaf tiles repeating the geometric patterns in the room.

  • Repeat curved and geometric lines balance the space connecting sources of water.

  • Points of interest are the pendant light at the bath entrance with a leaf print shade providing a warm glow in the room, also the glass molded sink and counter with an arched mirror and chrome lights contrasts cool surfaces with the warm earth tone colors used throughout.

  • Unique design of the chrome shower fixtures gives another point of interest adding the cool color of chrome to the natural earth colored slate tiles.

  • Warm soft yellow walls and ceiling colors continue up from the slate simulating nature's horizon and completing the room.
