Large Bath Remodel
NKBA Design Contest
Juanita Master bath suite featuring granite.
DESIGN PROBLEMS:
-
Inadequate storage.
-
Inadequate lighting and ventilation.
-
The narrow entry, full height walls and lack of lighting in the shower made a relatively large space feel confining.
-
The tub area was too small for the 6'-3" client.
-
The master suite fully occupies a narrow wing of the house. No space was available from the small bedroom area. A reconfiguration that maximized limited resources for additional space was needed to meet client requests.
CLIENT REQUESTS:
-
Mirroring the colors of the lakeside setting, create the sensation of being in a natural grotto. A soothing retreat for this busy computer software executive.
-
Add natural light and improved general lighting to the windowless space. Link all lighting to client designed computer automated control panel for master suite wing.
-
Radiant floor heating system to provide sufficient warmth for the entire space.
-
A two-person whirlpool tub.
-
Open shower with body sprays and two showerheads. One a personal shower.
-
Two lavatory sinks at increased height to accommodate taller than average client height.
-
Showerhead and shampoo niche at increased heights to accommodate taller than average client height.
-
Concealed laundry chute.
-
Storage for towels and toiletries.
-
Enclosed water closet compartment.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
-
The design concept of an interior "grotto" was realized in the following manner:
-
Use of natural materials: Gray-green slate and deep, dark green and gold speckled granite tiles withrough-hewn broken edges. Countertop mounted mottled glass lavatory vessels that look like carved rock crystals. An open Roman tub flume and wall mounted lavatory faucets suggest waterfalls and running streams. The vanity mirror is laser cut to the uneven, hand hewn broken edges of the tiles surrounding it. The broken tile pattern is continued all around the room, in the whirlpool and shower surrounds, ending discretely outside the open shower area. A soft, aquatic faux finish wash has been applied to all walls that were not tiled.
-
Space was taken from one of two entry closets to create water closet compartment.
-
Space was taken from powder room to relocate existing laundry chute into master bath within cabinetry.
-
A skylight, eight recessed can lights and 3 hanging pendants over vanity provide lighting. All are switched to a computerized digital control pad, which enables client to punch in preprogrammed codes for lighting combinations to suite his varying moods and grooming needs.
-
A hydronic floor heating system linked to the existing water heater provides the space with soothing warmth.
-
The taller than average heights of the client and his wife were addressed by the following features: Lavatory vessel sinks installed at 37 ½" above finished floor. Client was consulted to determine the most comfortable height of showerheads and body sprays . Shower fixtures were then installed accordingly.
