Design Statement
The 8’ x 8’ kitchen barely accommodated one person at a time. The unlucky cook felt trapped in the cramped box of their 1960’s condo kitchen. Substandard appliances were inadequate to prepare the special meals they dreamt of. Now their kitchen is part of the living space and dinners are prepared with the “right tools for the job.”
Problems
-
Condominium limitations included structural posts and stacked plumbing/venting for upper floors
-
Dedicated dining area used valuable floor space in the 650 square foot home
-
24” wide range and “builders’-special venting” didn’t satisfy clients’ enthusiasm for hot-oil cooking
Solutions
-
Structural posts and plumbing between floors created opportunity for a beautiful double column feature within island
-
A cantilevered granite “table” became the back of the island, doubling as eating area and desk
-
A soffit floats above the island, capping the columns, mimicking the curve of the granite
-
30” ceramic cooktop with over-sized burner and high BTUs for wok-cooking was selected
-
A stainless steel backsplash continues up the wall and leads to the 36” chimney vent whisking away smoke and smells
-
24” wide refrigerator/freezer maximizes food storage/freshness
-
Costs were contained choosing elegant yet readily available finishes including slab maple cabinets and Uba Tuba granite
-
Custom pendant lights create “personal-touch” sparkle over the island
