1950 KITCHEN REMODEL

The challenge was redesigning a 1950 galley kitchen to reflect the client’s aesthetic, and integrate the kitchen with the more open floor plan.

Problems with existing space:

  • Kitchen is closed off from family room and living room

  • Insufficient lighting

  • Inadequate storage space

  • No seating area for quick meals, snacks, and reading cookbooks

  • No area for preparing beverages

  • Need storage for Holiday and China Dishes, Cookbooks and Pet food

  • Add More Color to home

Solution:

  • Revisions that increased space

  • Vault existing ceiling in Dining room and Kitchen

  • Remove existing Pantry and open wall to Family Room

  • Remove bookcase to right of fireplace and incorporate the space into the Kitchen

  • Move wall to the left of the fireplace adding four square feet to the Kitchen area

  • Widen doorways into Dining and Living Rooms from entry, and add posts and half walls

  • Continue Living Room hardwood flooring into Dining, Kitchen and Hall

  • Remove one window in Kitchen providing more space for wall cabinets

  • Add skylights for natural lighting

  • Provide can lights in ceiling, task lighting under wall cabinetry, and pendants above desk

Cabinetry stained Fireside Red feature stainless steel and reed glass accents. Varied height cabinets interact with the vaulted ceiling creating geometric shapes. Reeded glass in the stainless framed cabinet doors adds textural interest. Radius end cabinets widen and soften the entry into the kitchen from the dinning room leading to the focal point of the kitchen. Identical stainless steel cabinets placed on each side of the hood and radius end panels on the lower cabinetry highlight and emphasize the cooking area. Chinese red granite covers the prep and cooking areas, contrasting with black granite on the beverage bar, garden window and eating bar. Warm natural stained hardwood floors and soft golden walls and ceiling complete this modern and inviting room.
