A fresh, inviting small guest bath in Bellevue.

A leaky shower provoked fear of the unknown lurking behind the tile walls in this guest bath. In addition to the water damage in the shower area, the original 35-year-old fixtures, vanity and ubiquitous globe bar light had seen their day and the owners were ready for a fresh, inviting ambiance to delight guests.

Design Challenges:

  • The out-dated white vanity and fixtures lacked style and needed a revitalizing make over.

  • Water damage in shower area required repair.

  • There was no insulation between the shower and garage making bathing a chilly experience.

  • Inadequate ventilation provided a moist environment for mold and mildew.

  • Uninspired lighting above the vanity dated the bathroom.

  • The original commode did not meet energy efficiency standards and had poor drainage due to a crushed pipe.

  • The commode had no privacy.

  • A pedestal or free-standing base was desired but storage was also required.

Design Solution:

  • Demolish the existing bathroom to create a serene environment to meet the functional and aesthetic needs of the family.

  • A retro furniture frame with glass shelf forms a base for a ceramic countertop and integral washbasin as a replacement for the vanity. The harmonious unit establishes a nostalgic style with a contemporary twist for the renewed space.

  • A companion cherry cabinet with frosted glass provides storage above the commode.

  • A privacy wall shields the commode and creates an alcove for the washbasin.

  • A tile inset imitates an area rug in front of the washbasin and further delineates this zone.

  • Delicate trumpet-shaped sconces flank the oval mirror that conceals a medicine cabinet for additional storage.

  • Over-sized rectangular "subway" tiles in warm caramel tones are accented by amber glass mosaics that complement the wood elements. The mono-chromatic color scheme creates unity and inspires calm.

  • Replacing the obscure framed glass door is a frameless shower door that extends the visual expanse of the space and allows an unobstructed view of the tile detail.

  • An adjustable personal shower adapts to the needs of various bathers.

Function:

  • Repair water damage and insulate exterior shower wall.

  • Install 110 CFM, Energy Star fan/light to improve ventilation and lighting.

  • Install 1.6 gallon commode and repair crushed pipe.
