Design Problem
A non-descriptive powder room presented a blank canvas. The white pedestal sink and toilet provided little contrast to the white walls that were begging for attention. In comparison to other areas of the house, the powder room lacked the present-day style and sophisticated influence of the client and her artistic simplicity.
Design Solution
The pedestal sink gave way to a custom asymmetrical floating vanity constructed of ebony-stained vertical grain oak. A vessel sink made of recycled aluminum rests on polished slate tiles set flush with the thick oak countertop edge. To complement golden highlights in the slate, yellow-gold glass tiles provide a glossy background for the wall-mounted faucet. Recycled aluminum raindrop tiles accent the stepped backsplash and provide textural contrast to the reflective slate and glass.
Color mimicking the warm hue of the tiles continues onto the once white walls and ceiling to envelope and unite the space. To round out the design, a mirror intersected by two shelves repeats the material of the vanity as well as the calming influence of its parallel lines. The mirror unit nestles between two sculptural forged iron sconces that reflect the warmth of the walls. All elements combine to form a perfect balance between utility and beauty.
The result is a unique, welcoming space with the familiarity of geometric forms and repeated horizontal lines inspiring tranquility. The owner is delighted with her powder room and feels that it contributes to the overall aesthetic of her home.
