Asian elements complement this Kirkland spa bathroom with a tree-top view.

This bathroom addition is designed to be a quiet retreat for pampering and relaxation, a place to enjoy a sweeping view of nature. The natural hillside gardens

surrounding the home reflect the client's passion for gardening and the beauty in nature. The new space coordinates and compliments the Asian influences of the existing house built in the 1960's. Structural design created by Michele Marquardi and Lucia Pizzio Biroli of Ectypos.

Client's Requests:

  • Bathroom emphasizing safety and function for a retired professional couple with grandchildren

  • Natural light and sufficient illumination

  • Utilize elements of Asian Design to blend with existing architecture, collection of Asian art, furniture and artifacts

  • Let the beauty of the outdoors in

  • Reinforce around tub, toilet, and shower for grab bars-some to be installed at a later date

  • Under floor tile heat

  • Linen storage and medicine cabinet

  • Bathing area to maximize the view

  • Skylight

  • Natural materials

Design Solution:

  • Widen entry into the bathroom to 43 inches and 42-inch into entry of shower and toilet area for open floor plan and wheelchair accessibility

  • Flush shower floor meets accessibility requirements and decorative grab bars in shower area

  • More grab bars can be added if needed as all wall areas are reinforced to accommodate them

  • Large picture window placed at the tub area to access the wonderful view of nature. A 30-inch pony wall placed at the foot of the tub for added view. Shoji screens at the entrance to the bath and on top of the pony wall are added for privacy. Daylight accessed in the vanity area with a window on each side of vanity and a skylight overhead. The shower area windows placed at 54 inches and 66 inches off finished floor access daylight without loosing privacy. Recessed can lights used throughout bathroom for added illumination. Decorative glass panels separate the shower area at the vanity and the toilet filtering in soft daylight.

  • Linen cabinets are placed opposite the vanity area. An illuminated medicine cabinet 42 inches off the floor, between upper and lower linen cabinets, has frosted glass sliding doors.

  • Vertical grain, natural finished fir cabinets are used to compliment the solid slab granite counter tops and tub deck. Neutral tiles with a hint of green are used to create a geometric pattern repeated throughout the room. A frosted glass sink partially recessed into the countertop makes the vanity area very unique. An oval mirror hung between the two vanity windows completes the area. Mosaic tiles with mirrored accent tiles installed across the vanity backsplash, and continuing into the shower, add a hint of reflection and interest to the room. Mosaic tiles are repeated at the base of the removable radius wood tub panel, which adorns the front of the tub, softening the geometric pattern of the room.

  • Sleek, polished chrome, levered handle faucets complete the room

  • Painted soft green walls compliment the tiles and reflect the beauty of the outdoors. A geometric patterned shower curtain completes the design and adds texture to the room
